Yeah, I know I’m a little behind on this book. It was released a week or two ago and it sat in my pile a little too long. I wasn’t sure about the premise or if it would be something I would enjoy until Mike discussed it last week. I’ve recently become familiar with Vanesa Del Rey’s artwork and I’ve been on the lookout for her other works.
To my surprise, the story doesn’t focus on the President or the First Gentlemen, but instead the children. Can you imagine being a child of the President of the United States in this political climate? It’s hard enough being a kid now with social media and just you know… being a teenager. Having to listen to the hate spewed by everyone criticizing your parent and everything they do and say must be incredibly difficult. Add into that being terrorized by an unseen force and it goes to another level.
The book does a good job balancing the political maneuvering the President has to handle and navigate and the horror aspects of the book. That’s not easy to do, especially in a single issue. I also want to mention that you don’t get many stories these days that include politics without getting a slant one way or another, but I didn’t feel like that mattered in this story which is nice. It helps becoming immersed in the story when you don’t have to think about the headlines, especially with it being election season here in the states.
Not only are our characters trying to prevent a military conflict, but they may be fighting for their spiritual lives at the same time. Talk about pressure.
Del Rey’s art absolutely shines in this book. It’s the perfect fit to give it that creepy feeling and feeling the oppressive nature of life in politics. The scratchy, bold lines add to the tension and horror.

Needless to say, this book made me a believer pretty quickly in this series. With three issues to go it’s encouraging that the story will be tight and concise. The first issue had everything you want in a first issue. Characters, conflict, horror, mystery and story all worked to create one of the best first issues I’ve read in a while. And with Mike and I doing the podcast each week that’s saying something.
