Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell #1 Review

If you’re a fan of stories like The Dark Knight Returns and Old Man Logan, Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell should be in your read pile. I love stories that include an old, grizzled hero eeking out the last bit of energy to make a difference in the world one last time before dying or hitting the retirement home.

The setup for this book is we follow Matt Murdock in a dystopian future after events that are so far left pretty unclear. We know there was a battle and everyone now lives in fear and hopelessness. Matt Murdock has no powers, he’s just a normal person trying to live his life and make a small difference in the world while not being killed. His fellow Marvel hero’s are either dead or missing.

After something happens (and of course it does), Matt is able to fight back and we begin to discover what became of other hero’s. I was a little surprised this book went as bleak and dark as it did, but it really worked in the emotional kick in the chin department. I’m not even a huge Marvel fan, but seeing what happened and what is happening to other hero’s was pretty damn chilling.

Steve McNiven does a great job with his artwork, clearly paying homage to Frank Miller with some of the layouts and style. Charles Soule is someone I always will give a chance to after reading his previous work on Darth Vader.

I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I can’t wait to see what happens next with this story. With it being issue 1 of 3, it sounds like the perfect length for this kind of tale.
