If you could change the past, would you? What would you change? And when would enough be enough?
Yestermorrow is the tale of a man posed with just those questions. A desperate attempt to save someone he loves and correct mistakes, past, present, and future, and the consequences of his actions.
Now, I tend to read mostly Fantasy. I find myself only rarely picking up anything more on the Science Fiction side of speculative fiction. Don’t get me wrong, I love SF, it’s just that I tend to get my SF fix from visual media most of the time, and my reading leans Fantasy. There is, after all, a surplus of excellent SF in television and film.
But I digress. Picking up Yestermorrow, by Frasier Armitage, once again proved to me, that I don’t read enough SF. Every time I do shift back to the genre, I’m usually happy with the results, and I think this novella certainly proves the rule.
Armitage establishes the stakes, in a gradual reveal, jumping back and forth in the timeline. He shines a little bit more light on the details with each chapter, surprising the reader as the story unfolds, leaving you second guessing yourself.
It’s woven together masterfully. The way these revelations and details are dispersed at just the right pace, leaving you on the edge of your seat, needing to know what happens next.
This novella has a lot going for it, a decent bit of humor, high speed chases, action, excellent character work, an intriguing plot perfectly executed… But most importantly it has heart, and so much of it. Really, it’s a beautiful and emotional piece, that certainly left me a bit choked up at times.
In the end, this novella left me wanting more (and I absolutely mean that in the best way possible). I will, without a doubt, be picking up more of Frasier Armitage’s works in the very near future.
