The Revenge of Thousands by Michael Roberti- a review

Before we were TRAITORS…
Before there was a GRAVE waiting for us all..
While more than WORMS remained…
It started with a war. It began with REVENGE.

I’ve been wanting to get a start on Michael Roberti’s work for a while now, and finally made the time to get started with The Revenge of Thousands. On one hand, and I’ve seen this recommended, this novella may best be enjoyed as a supplemental book for those that have already delved into the Crown and Tide world.

But I charged ahead, I had time for a novella, and I was getting impatient to start this series.

So, on the other hand, what we have here is an excellent story that focuses on some intriguing characters, in a rich, captivating world.

Not having read the other Crown and Tide books yet, I can’t say for sure. I think this works as a nice introduction to the world and characters. But, perhaps for some it would go better as a way to revisit a world they’re already interested in. Only way to find out is to read it… and you should absolutely do that.

In The Revenge of Thousands, we get a variety of POVs in a harsh setting as the factions prepare for war. There’s espionage, intrigue, betrayal, battles, tight knit friendships, and the interesting premise of one’s written work disappearing upon their death.

Roberti has a sorta straightforward, punchy style of writing, that helps him cram a ton of stuff into a small number of pages, while still nailing the pacing. Characters are complex, and well-realized. And the world itself is intriguing enough on its own!

I look forward to getting into the main novels of the Crown and Tide series, The Revenge of Thousands was a great taste, that left me wanting more!
