I know I’m a week behind on this one, I didn’t get to it last week on time. Even if it was a bit of a light week, The Exorcism at 1600 #2 was easily my favorite read this week.

The second issue picks up where the first left off, the family reeling from the incident that involved Mara at school. As the family tries to piece together what’s wrong with her and why she is acting out, we learn more about other events that may or may not be causing Mara’s behavior and experiences. Is it a demonic presence or is it a terrorist attack?

Weaving the possibility of outside forces causing these experiences with the political intrigue the President is tackling was a nice touch. Having a straightforward possession story doesn’t work as well in this medium for me usually, keeping the reader guessing makes the story much more intriguing and builds tension on two fronts. There is also some commentary on social media and it’s impact on our mental health with a light hand that I always appreciate. The different possibilities are presented, but not hammered home. Hannah Rose May does a fantastic job keeping the reader guessing and trusting that they follow the breadcrumbs.

Vanesa Del Rey continues to impress with her artwork. The detailed, scratchy artwork with the muddied color palate adds to the feeling of fear and the unknown. It’s the perfect match for this story.

With any possession story, I worry about it being too by the numbers. Thankfully this story is taking a different approach, especially focusing on the children of the President instead of the President herself. Questioning everything that happens makes the story so much more enjoyable, let’s hope this creative team nails the landing wrapping up the story.
