“… the worst day together is better than the best day apart.”
That quote hit really close to home for me. That’s the genius of this series, it’s a science fiction premise but with each issue it’s a different story that wraps humanity, grief and loss into the narrative.
For those who don’t know the premise of Assorted Crisis Events is that the world is in a time crisis. People pop in and out of existence, people disappear, you can randomly travel through time, get stuck in a time loop, and so on. This is an anthology series, so you can jump in with any issue, but I recommend at least reading issue #1 to get an idea of the crisis and how it works.
In issue #6, it focuses on a husband and wife who are having their own crisis. The husband is unstuck in time and wakes up each day at a different age. One day he’s his normal 40ish year old self, but the next day he’s a toddler and the next he’s an old man with dementia. She’s struggling to care for him and keep her own sanity, trying to figure out how to care for him or if she’s even the right person to care for him.
Whether you’re someone going through relationship trouble or if you’ve had a loved one who is suffering or with a special condition this story will break your heart.
Assorted Crisis Events works on three levels. The premise is unique and we focus on regular people and their struggles, each story being so different and effective and execution of said story. The artwork and panel layouts compliment the story in every way, with so many creative choices that you’ll want to re-read this book just to focus on each detail artist Eric Zawadzki uses in the pages. The story by Deniz Camp gets under your skin and will bring tears to your eyes, keeping you thinking about the story until the next issue to have it happen all over again.
I’m not sure how long this series can continue it’s streak, but every issue has been damn near perfect. Only a handful of issues in, this is already in my favorite all-time comics. I can’t recommend this highly enough.
