Conversations Worth Turning the Page For

The Darkness That Comes Before Part II: The Emperor Power, Paranoia, and the Gathering Storm

Listen to the episode here

Part II of The Darkness That Comes Before, The Emperor, may seem like a shift away from the philosophical opening of the novel, but it’s actually where the political game truly begins. Every conversation, every uneasy alliance, and every seemingly insignificant detail is another piece on Bakker’s massive chessboard.

Emperor Xerius III: Madman or Mastermind?

I almost forgot how much of an emphasis was placed on Emperor Xerius III.

On a first read, it’s easy to dismiss him as an arrogant, paranoid fool. On a reread, however, his character becomes far more interesting. We spent a good portion of the episode discussing whether Xerius is simply delusional or whether his paranoia occasionally allows him to stumble onto uncomfortable truths.

Cnaiur’s Tragic Beginning

This section also gives us our first extended look at Cnaiur.

Knowing where his journey ultimately ends changes these chapters completely. What initially appears to be the story of a hardened barbarian becomes something far more tragic, a man shaped by shame, manipulation, violence, and impossible expectations.

We talk about how Bakker deconstructs the traditional fantasy warrior archetype, revealing the fear and insecurity hidden beneath Cnaiur’s legendary reputation.

Hidden Clues Everywhere

One of the most enjoyable parts of recording these reread episodes is chasing details that completely escaped us the first time.

This discussion takes us into conversations about:

  • Early hints surrounding the Skin-Spies
  • The mysterious role of Onkis
  • Moënghus’ influence before he ever appears on the page
  • The Consult’s long game
  • The growing momentum behind the Holy War
  • Foreshadowing that doesn’t pay off until thousands of pages later

Whether every theory proves true is almost beside the point. Bakker’s world rewards close reading in a way few fantasy series ever do.

Bakker’s Unexpected Sense of Humor

Despite its reputation as one of fantasy’s darkest series, The Second Apocalypse contains moments of surprisingly dry humor.

In this section, Emperor Xerius steals the spotlight.

His inflated ego, impossible confidence, and spectacular misunderstandings create some of the funniest scenes in the novel, especially when viewed alongside the genuinely terrifying forces quietly manipulating events around him.

It’s easy to overlook those moments during a first read when you’re simply trying to keep up with the lore.

Did we catch every piece of foreshadowing? Not even close.

Did we uncover new connections we completely missed the first time? Absolutely.

If you’ve finished all seven books of The Second Apocalypse, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Were there details in this section that only became obvious after your own reread? Do you have theories about the gods, the Consult, or Moënghus that we didn’t mention?
