Panel Chewing #137 – This Week’s Best Comics & an Emotional Return to Lone Wolf and Cub
Another Wednesday means another stack of comics to dig through.
This week on Panel Chewing, Jarrod and I work through a diverse lineup of new releases, from major superhero books to creator-owned indies, discussing what surprised us, what disappointed us, and which title earned our Pick of the Week.
Not every book landed this week, but that’s part of the fun. We talk honestly about what works, what doesn’t, and why some books deserve another issue while others may be headed for the drop pile.
This Week’s Comic Reviews
Among the books we discuss are:
- Absolute Superman #20
- Absolute Green Arrow #2
- Tarzan Beyond #1
- Honor and Curse Eternal #4
- Avengers: Armageddon #1
- King Spawn #56
- Fury of the Firestorm #3
- Terabytes #7
- Astral Quantum #5
- The Eye Collector #1
- Land of Never #1
- Ezra Cain: Mysteries of the Peril Brutal Dark #5
- Gru: The Prophecy #2
- American Caper #8
As always, we finish the review section by revealing our Pick of the Week and explaining why it stood above the rest.
Lone Wolf and Cub Vol. 6: Lanterns for the Dead
In the second half of the episode, we continue our community read of Lone Wolf and Cub, discussing Volume 6: Lanterns for the Dead.
Rather than focusing on large-scale battles, this volume slows the pace and delivers some of the series’ most emotional storytelling so far. We explore its themes of grief, honor, sacrifice, survival, and the evolving relationship between Ogami and Daigoro.
It’s a quieter volume, but one that demonstrates just how powerful Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima’s storytelling can be. Through expressive artwork, subtle character moments, and surprisingly little dialogue, the series continues to build one of the most compelling father-and-son relationships in comics.
