Hit the Road and Thrive: Living a Creative Life with Dave Letterfly
In Episode 18 of Beyond the Page, I sit down with author and artist Dave Letterfly, whose unconventional journey is at the heart of his book, Hit the Road and Thrive: Seven Secrets for Living the Dream.
A Life Built Around Creativity
Dave’s story has taken him from joining a traveling circus at just 16 years old to working as a drummer, sign painter, performing horseman, RV muralist, and custom pinstriper. Today, he continues traveling and creating artwork at Harley-Davidson dealerships around the country.
But our conversation isn’t only about the unusual jobs Dave has had along the way. It’s about what he’s learned from continually being willing to try something new.
We talk about how easily we can lose the curiosity and imagination we had as children as responsibilities and practicality begin taking over and what it takes to rediscover that part of ourselves later in life.
Detours Aren’t Dead Ends
One of my favorite ideas from the conversation is Dave’s perspective on failure.
Instead of viewing setbacks as the end of the road, he sees them as detours, experiences that can lead somewhere we never expected.
Dave also speaks openly about addiction and recovery, including the difficult realization that he couldn’t overcome everything on his own. Asking for help became an important part of changing his life and continuing forward.
Taking the Scary Step
Throughout our conversation, we return to the idea of taking chances.
You don’t necessarily need to know exactly where the road leads before you begin. Sometimes you simply have to be willing to take that first uncomfortable step.
Whether you’re a writer, artist, musician, or someone wondering if there’s another direction your life could take, Dave’s story is a reminder that reinvention doesn’t have an expiration date.
