Conversations Worth Turning the Page For

Beyond the Page #16: A Union Workers Space Opera with Liam Begley

What happens when a space opera focuses not on emperors or chosen heroes, but on the workers keeping an interstellar civilization running?

In Episode 16 of Beyond the Page, I sit down with author Liam Begley to discuss his science-fiction novel Broken Interstellar, which he describes as a “union workers space opera.”

The story follows a union cargo worker stranded on a deserted planet who must find a way to reconnect with his ship and crew. But that premise opens the door to much larger questions about labor, economics, technology, and how societies might develop as humanity spreads across the stars.

Building Broken Interstellar

Liam and I talk about the worldbuilding behind the novel and his interest in exploring science fiction through the lives of ordinary workers.

We also discuss some of his literary influences, including Ursula K. Le Guin, Iain M. Banks, and Lois McMaster Bujold, as well as the challenge of creating a detailed fictional universe without overwhelming the story.

From Writing to Publishing

Our conversation also gets into the realities of becoming an author.

Liam shares his experience pursuing traditional publishing before turning toward self-publishing, along with the challenge every independent author eventually faces: finding the right readers.

We talk about book marketing, building an audience, and why reaching the people who actually want your book can be more valuable than simply reaching as many people as possible.

AI, Creativity & the Human Element

Later, we turn to AI and its growing role in writing and other creative industries. That leads to a larger conversation about what makes art feel human and whether our experiences, perspectives, and even imperfections are part of what gives creative work its value.

If you enjoy science fiction, ambitious worldbuilding, independent publishing, or conversations about the ideas behind the stories we read, this episode is worth checking out.
