The Thousandfold Thought Chapters 1–4: Conviction Is Not Truth

The Slog continues, and we’ve reached the final book of The Prince of Nothing trilogy.

Our reread of R. Scott Bakker’s The Thousandfold Thought begins with Chapters 1–4, and there’s an immediate change from The Warrior Prophet. After so much warfare and physical suffering, Bakker brings us back into the philosophical and character-focused side of The Second Apocalypse.

Achamian is becoming increasingly uncomfortable with Kellhus, even as the Mandate reaches its own conclusions about what Kellhus represents. Esmenet, meanwhile, is discovering what knowledge and power can mean for someone who spent most of her life denied both.

And Cnaiür may understand better than almost anyone what he’s watching.

As Kellhus works the Great Names around him, Cnaiür recognizes the manipulation and yet even he isn’t completely immune to it.

We also discuss Proyas, Conphas, the Consult, Moënghus, Seswatha, the Bashrag, that mysterious heart, and several details that take on entirely different meanings once you’ve finished the complete series.

Most importantly, these chapters leave us returning to a deceptively simple idea:

Conviction is not truth.

And in a world increasingly convinced that Kellhus is a prophet, that distinction matters.
