Hyde Street by Geoff Johns and artists Danny Miki, Ivan Reis and Brad Anderson has been solid from the start. Johns knows how to write comics and Hyde Street is the perfect mix of heart and horror. Issue 4 continues to impress.
In this issue we follow an actor who is trying to gain respect and confirmation from his friends and peers. A good hearted person who means well but of course, being Hyde Street, things go horribly wrong. Johns is a master at his craft telling stories in this format.
The pencils, colors and style perfectly fit the story. It’s not often you find a book that is firing on all cylinders like this, but when you do it’s something to really appreciate. Recently, I discussed Vicarious, where the story and artwork just didn’t match up. Neither were bad, but as a pair they didn’t click. It’s the complete opposite for Hyde Street, everything works.

I can especially appreciate when a story can loop back to a previous issue and fill in little gaps. Not that it was a huge revelation but it was a nice callback and made this story even more heart wrenching. With so many books on the shelves that start with a good idea but fail in execution, it’s nice seeing a cohesive and well thought out story that rewards the reader with those little details and unravels a mystery as you go. To say this is just another monster story is a disservice, it’s much more than that.
