Sorry for the delay on this but it’s finally THE END.
Day 5: Departure
Saturday morning was bittersweet as I packed up my belongings. I was eager to get back to the comforts of home, yet also sad that I had to leave such distinguished company. I knew when packing that this could possibly be the last time I’ll see any of these wonderful people. Not because I don’t want to return to this conference, I very much do, but life happens and who knows what the future will bring.
I stored my bags, got a quick breakfast and joined my friends outside on the patio. I had some great conversations including one with Janny Wurts where she showed me her sketch book of all the wonderful artistic interpretations of her epic fantasy series, The Wars of Light and Shadow. Her pencil work is just amazing and I was entranced.
I went and picked up my copy of Stephen Donaldson’s The Seventh Decimate—an ARC that I won in an auction. Had to somehow stuff that in my carry on bag as well. With all the books I bought, the damn thing weighed twice as much than on the way here.
People came and went and I just soaked it all in. I was still no less star struck as when I first arrived. I don’t think that will ever go away. Everyone says, well “writers are people too”, but these particular writers; these particular people; they are the ones that send my imagination into overdrive. They are the ones whose words and wisdom on the page make me think beyond the story, beyond just the words themselves. They are the ones whose writing is an experience to behold, rather than just a diversion or hobby. They are the ones who greeted me with warmth and kindness. I will forever be grateful for that. I will always be grateful for this experience and hope to do it again.
Thank you to A.P. Canavan for introducing me to this world and being a good friend. Thank you to my favorite writers: Ian C. Esslemont, Stephen Donaldson, Steven Erikson and Janny Wurts. Thank you to all the kind people who run the conference and all the presenters and attendees. If this sounds like an awards speech, well, that’s what it feels it. I’ve won the award of a life time experience.
Hopefully I can attend again next year…
