To hear about the rest of the books we discussed this week, episode 85 can be found here.
The first issue of Assorted Crisis Events was quite the experience and perfectly setup the rules and expectations we should have for the series. If you aren’t already familiar, in this series we follow people that live in a world where super hero type crisis events happen frequently, and they go about their lives. People randomly disappear, cities are destroyed out of nowhere, people travel through time and appear out of nowhere, you find yourself in a different time period or dimension, or other crisis-style events.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with issue 2, but instead of a broader story, issue 2 is much more focused and personal. It features our main character and his interaction with his family, his life, love, time and loss. During the issue we jump through time with our main character and it tells the story, unraveling emotional beats from his life that everyone can relate to in some way. There are scenes and lines that get repeated, and at first I wondered why but by the end it’s very effective in pulling your heart strings.
The artwork helps highlight certain characters, with them being in color at the backgrounds in a solid color, giving it a dreamlike state. Which makes sense because we’re traveling through time and experiencing this event with them.

Issue 2 tells a very personal and poignant story that will be relatable in some way or another to every reader. It explores our life, our mistakes, our triumphs and the people around us. Will history repeat itself? You’ll have to read it and make your own assumptions. I love when comic books push the reader and go for more of a personal story, especially in this format. Comic books can tell stories like this, it’s not all capes and cowls that some non-comic readers think it is. If you haven’t read this issue (or the first), you really should.
