I really do try to mix up my picks each week and not pick the same titles month after month. Some weeks are easier than others when there are several to choose from, but this week was pretty rough. If I’m choosing the best book of the week, I’m not going to reach pick something I didn’t really enjoy as much as something else.
This week my pick is Babs #5. Listeners who are familiar with the podcast already know that I love Ennis and Burrows, especially when they are together. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t adore everything they do but more often than not I enjoy some aspects. With Babs, I enjoy damn near everything. For those who aren’t familiar, Babs is a barbarian type of character with a foul mouth and questionable decision making ability. She’s Red Sonja with a twist of humor, prepotency for violence and sarcasm.
Our hero (or anti-hero) and her antics continue in this episode, with a satisfying and hilarious event that gets her out of her latest bind. Another group of characters discover that not everything is as it originally seemed and they have trusted and followed the wrong type of people.
In this issue there are some sidesplitting Lord of the Rings references that fans and haters of the series will enjoy. I really love the Sword and Sorcery jabs because they all seem to be in good fun. Because let’s face it – the classic tropes and character traits are pretty ridiculous.
After a week of very mediocre reads, Babs was just what I needed. The series continues to be entertaining, hilarious and exceptionally well done. Not only the humor and character work that only Ennis can pull off, but the over the top violence is something Burrows excels at. Babs continues to be the perfect mix of humor, action, characters and story.
